Dear San Antonio Mayor Hardberger and City Councilmembers,
Please slow down the important decision to move forward with two new nuclear
plants for Matagorda County. The costs projected are already seen to be
serious underestimates, and hopefully the experience with South Texas
Nuclear Project units 1 and 2 will have taught us a lesson. Those plants
went over 5 times over budget, and were late coming online.
The nuclear plants that NRG wants to build, Advanced Boiling Water Reactors,
have never been built before in the U.S. Similar plants have had a poor
record so far in Japan. In a recent earthquake, radioactive wastes from several of the
plants ended up in the sea. We cannot afford, economically or healthwise, to
risk more nuclear plants on the Gulf Coast in Texas, especially with hurricanes
becoming more intense.
NRG is a company that has never built a nuclear plant, and was near bankruptcy
in 2003. Rate increases to build risky nuclear plants make no sense. Please delay
your vote, and take time to learn more.
Let's work together to find a better, safer path to our energy future. Citizen input is needed
on a broad scale, and time is needed to make a sound decision in such an important matter.
San Antonio's power supply will be more than ample with a new gas plant and Spruce 2
coal plant coming online.
The fastest, most affordable way to meet energy needs is with efficiency, and we know
how to do this. It's our best path toward acting to curb global warming. We must
get serious about efficiency now - and not squander time or resources on nuclear
plants that won't't be built for years.
Please listen to the citizens of San Antonio who want you to delay your decisions
and take time for input and thorough planning. Please also listen to the voices of others
throughout the state and nation who are watching as you make these crucial decisions.
We cannot afford to be wrong in our energy choices at this time. Nuclear
power is risky to our health and economy, and is not a solution to global warming.
Energy efficiency and renewable energy offer affordable solutions now.
I urge you to slow down, delay your votes, and take more citizen input
in order to make safe and sound decisions.
Sincerely,
San Antonio Rate Hike for Nuclear Power could
come as early as May 15th... Take ACTION!
What else can you do?
